Light energy is very effective in stimulating tissue remodeling. This is especially true where the facial skin is concerned. Although the sun’s rays can severely damage our skin, a proper mix of wavelengths, correctly focused, can actually jumpstart a skin rejuvenation process. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a proven means to correct a number of skin problems including fine wrinkles, age spots, brittle, dull regions of skin, and even injury scars. We recommend the IPL photofacial treatment for our Houston-area clients who bring us their concerns about age-related skin problems.
Broadband Light Energy
An IPL photofacial treatment is performed using a specialized instrument that emits a mix of wavelengths. Filters within the instrument allow us to calibrate the output intensity and the relative amounts of the frequencies. This mix of frequencies results in a pixelated light beam that passes directly through the epidermal layer without heating it up very much.
Instead the light energy is absorbed further down in the skin. The dermal layer contains darkened tissues such as acne scars, age spots, and other blemishes. These tissues appear dark because they aren’t reflecting much light to begin with. When they absorb the intense light from the IPL photofacial device, they are slightly cauterized. Capillaries in these tissues shrink, and this also helps to reduce the appearance of the blemish.
What Happens After Treatment?
The affected cells are slightly damaged and are soon replaced with healthier tissue. The constriction of collagen in the skin layers actually stimulates further collagen production. After about five treatments, each of which can be completed in less than 30 minutes, the skin is becoming noticeably smoother and tauter.
Suitable For Most Skin Tones
The early-developed IPL photofacial devices from years past weren’t as advanced as those in use today. People with a lot of melanin in their skin weren’t suitable candidates for this procedure because of the risk of bleaching. Today, all that has changed. The modern IPL devices can be calibrated to adjust for this. Nearly everyone who is concerned about discolored skin and visible blemishes can benefit from IPL treatments.
Is It Right For You?
There’s one way to find out if an IPL photofacial is right for you. This non-invasive, cosmetic treatment is becoming ever more popular, and that’s because of the simplicity of the procedure and also because of the long-lasting positive results.
