Over the past decade, advances in surgical techniques have rapidly changed women’s health care. It is estimated that urinary incontinence affects about 13 million American women every year. Despite their impact on the affected individual’s quality of life, most of these conditions are often untreated.
Mirena® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is an intrauterine contraceptive that delivers small amounts of hormone directly to the uterus. Made of soft, flexible plastic, it is put in place by your health care provider during an office visit. Mirena® is birth control that lasts as long as you want, for up to 5 years. Mirena® works continuously, without a pill, without a daily hassle. Once Mirena® is properly placed, all you have to do is check the threads once a month. Your healthcare provider can show you how. If you have trouble finding the threads, be sure to use a backup form of birth control and call your healthcare provider.

Essure® is a procedure that is completed by using a hysteroscope. Small permanent “plugs” (microinserts) are placed into the fallopian tubes from inside the uterus, using a vaginal approach. This means sterilization can be performed without an incision on the abdomen and without general anesthesia. The procedure is very effective and can be performed either in the office or at an outpatient surgery center. Most patients can return to work the next day.
